Definition

Bandwidth Bankwidth addresses the amount of transfer space allotted to a web site on a monthly basis. It may also be referred to as "transfer space" or "data transfer". Each time a web page is served up, all items on the page (images, text, flash) consume bandwidth. The number of visitors to a site along with the weight of each page determines how much bandwidth consumed. Flash and large image files quickly consume bandwidth.
Database A structured collection of records or data that is stored in a computer in an organized fashion so that a program can consult it to answer queries. The records retrieved in answer to queries
Disk Space Disk space refers to the amount of room on a web server that your site is allowed to consume. The weight of the images and other files determine how much disk space needed. Text takes a lot less disk space than images. Databases can consume large amounts of space depending on the data they contain. Most web sites will never consume more than 25 to 50MB of space.
Host A web host is a machine (computer) that communicates via a network, includes servers and clients. In order for files to be accessed by Internet users, the files must be on a machine that allows access.
Internet Protocol (IP) The IP address is a series of numbers which identifiy the web host and server from where the web site is served along with a location for that web host. Most IP addresses are translated into domain names for ease of use.
Internet Service Provider (ISP) An ISP provides computers access to the Internet. ISPs may offer dial-up connections, DSL connections or broadband cable connections. Many confuse an ISP with a web host. While some ISPs may offer web hosting, they are not the same.
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy)

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a cryptographic product that enables people to securely exchange email messages with both privacy and security. Most commonly, encrypted messages are in plain text, with the sender and recipient each having a public and private key.

Server An application program on a computer that allows it to accept connections in order to service requests by sending back responses.
SSH File Transfer Protocol or SFTP The SSH File Transfer Protocol or SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality over a data stream.

The SSH file Transfer protocol does not provide security, but more lines used for SSH File Transfer are secure.

Uptime Uptime in the world of web hosting refers to the amount of time each month that a given web server is functional, serving your web site to customers. Without a 99.5% or greater uptime guarantee, a web host should not be considered reliable enough for a business web site. Most professional hosts offer uptime guarantees of 99.9%.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) A URL can be a number (IP) or name pointing to a location on the Internet, much like a house and street address.
